ROMAN DITCH, CAISTOR GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Map Sheet:TA10SW
Parish:CAISTOR, WEST LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

PRN 52698
A LARGE DITCH WAS DISCOVERED DURING AN EVALUATION. IT IS THOUGHT TO BE THE FIRST EVIDENCE FOR A DITCH AROUND THE TOWN WALLS. {1}
A watching brief in 1993 uncovered the remains suggesting the presence of substantial features which may be Roman ditches within the walled town. {2}
THE NORTHERN END OF THE DITCH POSSIBLY OCCURS IN THE AREA OF PHASE 2 WATCHING BRIEF. NO FINDS WERE MADE. {4}
Further evaluation was undertaken to ascertain if retaining stonework found in the 1992 evaluation belongs to the Roman wall. The wall does not appear to have had foundations and does not utilise the Roman foundations. Part of the Roman wall foundation was exposed aligned northeast-southwest, at almost the same height as in 1992. {5}{6}
