Full description

This is the record for the south-eastern quarter of the medieval and post-medieval settlement of Market Rasen. The quarter is defined by the railway line that runs approximately north to south and the line of Queen Street and Willingham Road that runs approximately east to west. For further information on the town of Market Rasen, see the records for the medieval core (PRN 52750) and for the general settlement of Market Rasen (PRN 52752).

One of the sites contained within the south-eastern quarter of Market Rasen include the Maltings (PRN 53633).

During geophysical survey and trial trenching outside the medieval core at TF111 885, a post-medieval pit, pond and field boundary were recorded. {1}{2}{3}

A site visit, as part of an overall Desk-Based Assessment on land at Oxford Street, Market Rasen, identified clearly visible east to west aligned ridge and furrow, apparently overlain by a slight bank along a hedge boundary. This sequence suggests that the ridge and furrow was created by ploughing before the field was enclosed from the medieval Lammas Leas or adjacent East Field. The field, known as Cuckoo Close in 1779, was enclosed privately before that date. The implication is that the field had not been consistently ploughed since the mid-eighteenth century or earlier and archaeological deposits could be unusually well preserved below the ridges. {4}

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks associated with residential development on land at Blacksmith's Court, Oxford Street, Market Rasen. The watching brief identified a number of post-medieval deposits including an east to west aligned ditch and a steep sided refuse pit, and an undated north-west to south-east aligned ditch. {5}{6}

Medieval ridge and furrow at TF 1114 8866 was recorded by earthwork survey prior to residential development. Traces of ridge and furrow were also seen during excavation in the adjacent field. {7}{8}
