Full description

The former watermill on George Street was built in 1830 and is a four storey red brick building of English wall bond, with a slate roof. It has a two-storey extension to the south and a modern two-storey extension to the north. It has original cast iron windows. It was built as a warehouse at the site of a proposed canal terminal basin. The canal was not built, so it was converted to a watermill using the flow on the adjacent river Rase. {1}{2}

A photographic and drawn record was made of the interior at Church Mill, off George Street, prior to the removal of all workings in advance of redevelopment. None of the millstones and only two of the supporting frames survived. The original waterwheel was removed in 1907 but remains of the main shaft drive and lay shafts on the ground and first floors were present. However, the incompleteness of the machinery present made it impossible to provide a definitive account of the original mill workings and how they were altered/replaced over the years. {3}{4}

The mill is a Grade II Listed Building. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5}
