THE NAME POTTERGATE IS SAID TO BE DERIVED FROM THE LARGE AMOUNT OF ROMAN POTTERY FOUND ON THE SITE. THE POTTERGATE ARCH IS ONE OF THE REMAINING GATES OR ENTRANCES TO THE CATHEDRAL CLOSE SOUTH EAST OF THE CATHEDRAL; IT WAS FORTIFIED IN 1319. {2}
The Pottergate Arch is a Grade I listed gateway to Close wall. It was built in the mid 14th century and restored in 1884 and the late 20th century. It was constructed of dressed stone and ashlar with a rubble core and a lead roof. There is a stone octagonal corbelled side wall stack, a plinth and a moulded crenellated parapet with crosslets. The arch is of two storeys and has a single bay. {4}
