Full description

PRN 70153
The north gate of the Roman Colonia of Lincoln.{1}
A record of the remains was made in 1995. {2}
The arch spans the line of Ermine Street, the principal Roman road from London to York, providing access to the north from the walled town. The remains include the inner arch, the eastern arch (currently used for pedestrians) and part of the springer of the western arch. The current ground level at the central and western arches is approximately two metres above the late Roman ground level. The bastion, the semicircular front of the west gate tower, lies to the north west of the arch. The remains consist of a semicircular stone structure which was later incorporated into a rectangular medieval gate structure. {2}
Observations made of ground works to the immediate north of the archway revealed areas of metalling associated with the earlier use of the road and gateway. Some of those are presumed to be of Roman date. {3}
During a watching brief, the northward extent of the western arch wall was located. A wall exposed during groundworks contrasted in composition with the visible remains, and may belong to the earlier Roman wall core. {7}{8}
