Map Sheet:SK95NE
Parish:NAVENBY, NORTH KESTEVEN, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

PRN 61721
During trial trenching, five worked flints were recovered, comprising blades and flakes, possibly dating to the late Mesolithic or early Neolithic periods. {1}{2}
During a watching brief, an early Neolithic feature and an undated curvilinear gully thought to be associated with the feature were recorded. The feature was originally thought to be a double posthole but this idea was discarded. The oval feature had a fill of burnt silty sand and occasional limestone pieces, with charcoal indicating possible in situ burning. Burnt bone and twelve sherds of early Neolithic pottery were recovered from the fill. If the feature and the gully are related, they may be structural in nature, and constitute tentative evidence for early Neolithic settlement. {3}{4}
Three watching briefs were undertaken during ground-works on land at Chapel Heath prior to development. They uncovered 14 unstratified flint artefacts dating to the late Mesolithic to early Neolithic period. {5}{6}
