Full description

PRN 44039
An excavation recorded a sequence of 26 intercutting burials, thought to represent a period of over a century. The coffins were made from planks which had been charred on the outer surface, a characteristic of Saxon burials. An inscribed lead plaque dating to the 10th or possibly 11th century was recovered from one of the graves. The cemetery was sealed by a soil platform circa 600mm thick. A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon grave slab dating to the late 10th-11th century and at present embedded in the fireplace of the former nave of St Helen's Church (PRN 41986) may have originated from this cemetery.{1}
