Full description
PRN 62200
During trial trenching a north-south aligned curvilinear ditch was recorded, this is thought to be an enclosure ditch with a ditch terminal defining the entrance. An east-west gully of the same date was also identified and is thought to be representative of land division. Three sherds of scored ware pottery were recovered from the site, they are of a similar type to those found at the palisaded enclosure to the east (PRN 65280). The environmental assessment of samples from the ditch show no evidence of settlement activity nearby. However, pottery and animal bone recovered from the ditch suggest some form of occupation nearby although it is uncertain what form this took. {1}{2}
Further excavation on the site revealed a series of pits, ditches and the enclosure ditch seen during the evaluation. The enclosure ditch yielded three sherds of middle Iron Age pottery. The pits appear to have been used as refuse pits and tentatively suggest some form of occupation in the vicinity. The ditches probably relate to agricultural activity, and the enclosure may have been used as a livestock paddock. {4}{5}
