Full description
This country house, which belonged to the Whichcote family, was described as 'a mixture of styles and periods'. An undated drawing of the house showed an asymmetrical building with crow-stepped gables. The exact date of construction is unclear, although the house appears to have been rebuilt sometime prior to the 19th century in a symmetrical Georgian style, retaining some elements of the older house as the eastern wing. It was demolished in 1952 after having been left in 'such a condition that no sensible person would live there' following military occupation during the Second World War. The location of the house is clearly depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. {2}
The Whichcote family and their predecessors, the Carres, are extensively discussed. {3}{4}{5}
The house and its grounds are used as the setting for the story "Lost Hearts" by M.R. James. In the story the house is described as dating from the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14). {6}
The surrounding parkland at Aswarby Hall has been designated as a Registered Park (see PRN 63997). {7}
