THIS IS THE RECORD FOR THE EAST QUARTER OF THE POST-MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT OF SLEAFORD. THE QUARTER IS DEFINED BY THE EXTENT OF THE LISTED BUILDINGS ON EAST GATE TO THE EAST, AND BY THE LINE OF SOUTH GATE AND NORTH GATE TO THE WEST (THIS IS AN ARBITARY DIVISION). This record covers the eastern half of the post medieval settlement of Sleaford. Its area is based on the extent of settlement shown on late 19th century maps and it does not include the extensive 20th century growth. {5}
During a watching brief in 2002 at Navigation Yard, 18th to early 20th century pottery and a quantity of clay pipe pieces were recovered (PRN 65284a). The clay pipe finds consisted of nineteen stems dating from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century and a complete bowl dated from 1835 to 1868. The bowl has well-moulded foliage in prominent relief on the mould seams and two poorly-defined human figures with shepherds' crooks on the bowl faces. A partial maker's mark appears around the bowl rim, showing the letters 'SCALE'. These indicate that the maker was one of the Nightscales who worked in Sleaford in the nineteenth century. This is confirmed by the design, which is a known product of William Nightscales who worked as a clay pipemaker between 1835 and 1868. The bowl and several of the stems are unused and slightly distorted, suggesting that they could be kiln waste. This may indicate a clay pipe kiln in close proximity (see PRN 62633), and William Nightscales was recorded in 'Carr's Lane', which is almost certainly Carre Street, where this site is located.{1}{2}
A borehole survey at Navigation Yard retrieved a small assemblage of post medieval pottery and tile (PRN 65284a). Late post medieval artefacts were recovered from significant depth at two boreholes, but for the most part post medieval deposits appear to persist at about 90 centimetres from gound surface. The survey found that apart from the northern part of the site, the archaeological deposits beneath the site all appear likely to be of post medieval date, and potentially associated with the construction of the Navigation Yard complex.{3}{4}
During a watching brief in the grounds of Carre's Grammar School (TF 0683 4617), a small assemblage of post medieval finds including pottery, 2 clay pipe stems, tile and glass was recovered (PRN 65284b). This is thought to indicate the presence of a building of 17th-18th century date nearby. {6}{7}
