[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.]
This building probably has medieval origins, although it appears to be of early 17th century date. It has an ashlar stone front with a two storey bay window and several mullioned windows. On the front is 19th century lettering reading 'Good stabling and loose boxes'. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The street front is of 17th century date, however the proportions of the building suggest an earlier date (possibly before 1500). A rear wing to the south may have been timber framed, possibly of 17th century date, but is now stone. There was formerly a carriage entrace to the west but this has been blocked to provide more accommodation. {2}
This pub is also referred to as the Milestone Inn. {3}
The medieval origins of this building are considered 'doubtful' and 'uncertain' due to lack of evidence. {4}
