Full description

This building dates to around 1766. It was formerly a theatre, however the interior has been mostly gutted and it is now used as a club. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The theatre was built between 1766-8 by William Clark, a mason, and James Whitley, 'comedian'. Whitley had a company of actors and managed several Midlands theatres. The theatre originally had a large stage, gallery, pit and two tiers of boxes. A cellar belonging to an earlier house was incorporated into the building. Extensive alterations were carried out in 1849-53, when the floors of the pit and the stage were apparently leveled. The theatre closed in June 1871 and the building was put to other uses. The interior has been much altered but it is still possible to see traces of the theatre structure. A large 18th century doorcase which may originally have come from the entrance hall has been reset elsewhere. {2}
It is now a Tourist Information Centre. {4}
