Former stables at Holywell Hall, now offices. Built c.1732 with minor 20th century alterations. Built of squared limestone rubble with rusticated ashlar quoins and dressings, and a hipped Collyweston roof. Single storey parallel ranges with attics and an octagonal cupola with clock. The former stables were the subject of a programme of historical building recording and archaeological monitoring, conducted in January 2015 to inform their conversion and change of use. The structure was built in the Burlington style of Palladian revival, typical of the early 18th century. It is of two storeys and 7 bays, with a central archway and pediment to the southern elevation. Above the archway is an octagonal stone lantern tower with clock. The building is believed to date to about 1732, and is thought to have originally consisted of a single, southern range of stable rooms to the ground floor, with a hayloft to the first floor rooms. The building shows evidence of evidence of extensive alterations, conducted in the mid 18th century, when the northern range of rooms is believed to have been added. It is also thought that the exterior of the southern range was re-faced at the same time. A datestone showing the year 1764 can be seen just inside the main doorway at the ground floor, which would seem to indicate when these alterations took place. More recent internal alterations were also recorded, relating to the building's conversion to offices at some point in the 20th century.
The monitoring of the groundworks revealed the remains of several brick-lined drains, that had clearly once formed part of the original drainage system associated with the early stables building. {3}{4}
