Full description

A "Roman site" was revealed during field walking and greyware pottery was seen. {1}

A single sherd of 2nd to 3rd century Romano-British greyware was recovered in January 2005, during the excavation of geotechnical test tips along the proposed route of the Aswarby to Harrowby water pipeline. The sherd was a surface find, recovered from immediately adjacent to test pit 7.
Subsequent field walking, conducted in February 2005, identified a small scatter of Roman pottery in this area. The sherds were all lying on the surface of the field, but were not retained. {2}{3}

During a watching brief and subsequent excavation along sections of a water pipeline route, evidence of late Roman activity was recovered from this site. A single ditch was the only feature discovered, however a fairly large assemblage of pottery was recovered, mostly of late 3rd to 4th century date. Some of the sherds had been burnt, suggesting use as cooking pots, suggesting occupation nearby. Industrial residues were also recovered, mostly iron smithing slags including hearth bottoms. An external metalled surface of probable late Roman date was also identified, although it was not clear if this represented a track or road or a yard surface. Two pieces of human bone were found redeposited in Roman and later contexts and it is suggested that these may have come from isolated Roman burials. {4}{5}
