Full description

A United Methodist Church is indicated on the 1932 OS County Series map. The building survives and is still in use as Risegate Methodist Church in 2010. The present building replaced, on the same site, an earlier Wesleyan chapel of 1826 which was conveyed to the Free Methodists in 1855. The present extant chapel was built in 1886 and in 1901 it was extended to include a Sunday School. It is of red brick construction with a gabled roof with a slate covering. The broad front has seven bays separated by brick pilasters and has dentil brick cornices. The segmental-headed central doorway is sited in a narrow bay with a stone tablet above inscribed 'Methodist Free Church 1886'. The lateral bays have original round-headed windows with margin lights. The reverse elevation has the same arrangement but without a doorway and with one of the windows now blocked. The pedimental west gable has stepped corbels in the gable verges and a dentil brick cornice. It is divided into three bays by brick pilasters. Any other details are now obscured by a lean-to annexe. The east gable has dentil brick verges. {1}{2}{3}{4}
