Full description
The Stamford Mercury of 11 February 1836 reported that a skeleton and a ‘two-edged’ brass sword had been found during the sinking of a shaft for a steam engine at the corn-mill premises of T. Richardson. These premises are thought to be off Waterside North. The artefacts were reportedly found about 16ft down in ‘rotten peat and sand’. The sword was almost certainly of late Bronze Age date, and measured about 2ft long with the hilt being bound with gold wire and finely worked escalloping. It was not clear whether the skeleton and the sword were associated. {1}
