Summary

Medieval settlement remains around Mablethorpe Hall visible on aerial photographs

Grid Reference:TF 492 845
Map Sheet:TF48SE
Parish:MABLETHORPE, EAST LINDSEY, LINCOLNSHIRE

Full description

Cropmarks and earthworks of enclosures, ridge and furrow and boundaries are visible in aerial photographs and were plotted by the National Mapping Programme. There are the remains of tofts, enclosures and field systems of medieval date and are indicative of an area of medieval settlement around the medieval moated hall that stood here (see PRN41431). To the south of Alford Road at TF 493 844 there is a further possible moated enclosure. This cluster of medieval settlement remains is probably part of Mablethorpe St Mary and related to the remains found around the church (see PRN44567). {1}
During trial trenching at Mablethorpe Hall Care Home in July 2012, Trench 1 revealed a sequence of medieval pits and ditches which contain demolition material (brick fragments and roof tile) and domestic refuse (pottery and a medium amount of animal bone). The pottery from these features suggests that the demolition of the building probably took place in the mid 16th to 17th centuries. Trench 2 contained a single ditch and pit which contained sherds of 15th and 16th century pottery and animal bones. {2}{3}
