Full description

7 sherds of Roman pottery, 2 pieces of Roman brick and a possible tessera were found during two phases of excavation by Humber Field Archaeology at 89 Barrow Road, 1999-2000.

Of the 7 sherds of redeposited Roman pottery, three were from the 1999 evaluation, and the rest from 2000. One is from an outbent rim jar, 160mm diameter, possibly later 2nd century.

Two fragments of redeposited Roman brick were recovered from context [1233], the fill of an early medieval beam slot. Both fragments were made in a wooden mould. The smaller piece is identifiable as a bessalis, 40mm thick. It was burnt after breakage.

A single possible sandstone tessaera was found, also redeposited. It was white in colour, with no remnants of mortar, but appeared to have a worn surface. [1, 2]
