Full description

Two ditches and two pits were recorded during a watching brief on two development plots, School Lane, in 2001.

In Plot 1, a shallow north/south ditch was observed for a length of 8m. It was dug into the subsoil and had a rounded, concave profile. The clay silt fill contained frequent fragments of limestone brash, but no dating evidence.

A second ditch ran north east/south west, also cutting into subsoil. It was 1.28m wide and 0.38m deep, with a shallow, rounded profile. The clay silt fill contained no dating evidence.

The first pit was a steep-sided feature extending for 2m along a foundation trench. The base was not observed. Another feature, probably a second pit, cut into the first. No dating evidence was recovered from either.

The only finds on this plot were a 12th century shelly ware body sherd, the base of a 16th century Cistercian ware cup, and an 18th century black glazed ware sherd. [1]
