TA 11 NW THORNTON CURTIS COLLEGE ROAD (east side)
10/80 Walls enclosing orchard approximately 130 metres east-south-east of Thornton Abbey Gatehouse

Walls. North wall medieval or early post-medieval, other walls later; medieval masonry and brick used throughout. North wall, c100 metres long, with chamfered ashlar plinth up to 4 courses high and upper section of limestone ashlar, squared chalk, brick and tile, up to 8 courses high. Blocked or rebuilt section to west. Section to west end continued as grass- covered bank. Wall adjoining to south of re-used squared limestone and ashlar.

Scheduled monument consent regarding repair and maintenance works associated with Higher Level Stewardship agreement AG00426922. [2]

The wall was assessed by ArcHeritage in September 2014, in order to inform a management plan for consolidation and repair (funded through Environmental Stewardship AG00426922). The report included Appendix 3, listing all the architectural fragments incorporated in the boundary wall; the wall was found to be of post-dissolution date. [3, 4]

The wall was repaired and consolidated in autumn 2015 as part of Environmental Stewardship scheme AG00426922. [5]
