TA 11 NW THORTON CURTIS THORNTON ABBEY ROAD (east side, of)
10/90 Ruins of Thornton Abbey south precinct gateway approximately 180 metres south of Abbot's Lodge.
GV II
Ruins of former gateway in south precinct wall of Thornton Abbey. Probably C14-C15. Two sections of walling flanking entrance opposite causeway across moat. Chalk rubble and squared blocks, brick and limestone ashlar. Section to east, c3 metres high, c2.5 metres east-west and cl metre thick, has chalk rubble core with brick through-courses, brick plinth and facing of squared chalk, brick and limestone ashlar. Section to west, c3 metres high, c2 metres north-south and cl metre thick, survives as mortared chalk rubble core with some brick on east side.

Scheduled monument consent regarding repair and maintenance works associated with Higher Level Stewardship agreement AG00426922 [2]

An assessment of the gate piers was carried out by ArcHeritage in 2014, in order to inform a management plan for consolidation and repair (funded through Environmental Stewardship agreement AG00426922). Appendix 5 comprised a specification for the consolidation works. [3, 4]

The gate piers were consolidated and supported by new brick pillars in autumn 2015, as part of Environmental Stewardship scheme AG00426922. [5]
