Full description

1) The word "toot" comes from old English and means "look out hill", so earthwork may be of Saxon or Danish origin. No coins, & c, found on site to support this theory (bi4)
2) Mound; to N & E, two moated enclosures- of later date? (b3)
3) Identity as motte & bailey disputed; is a homestead moat? (b2 & b10)
4) Motte is C40ft across & tree covered (b6)
5) The Toot, a moated mound, is 60ft in diameter at summit, approx 120ft at base, & 13ft high (b3)
6) A cottage was built on this island, with a drawbridge across the narrowest part of the moat (b1(1847)).
7) To N & E of motte are 2 larger moated enclosures- of later date? (b3)
8) Confused earthworks to N & W do not resemble baileys & do not appear strong enough for defence. Are the remains of Manorial enclosures? (b5).
9) SAM 91. Motte surrounded by deep waterfilled moat approx 20ft wide (bi6)
10) To N & E of motte area 2 large moated enclosures. Ditch around motte is in water, other moats are dry (bi3(1918))
