Excavations in 1976 revealed a series of 13th century road surfaces beneath a massive 18th century build up of material. The roads overlaid a 12th century building with a hearth and oven, The building stood at the edge of a natural hollow that had been used as a midden, the rubbish also filling three 11th to 12th century monastic drains.
April to May 1976. Norwich Survey excavation to investigate the possible line of Late Saxon defences, no evidence was found.
Below a massive 18th century build up on the site (using material taken from the cloisters) was a series of 13th century road surfaces running in a northwest to southeast alignment.
These overlay a 12th century building and post hole construction with a hearth and oven.
The building lay at the edge of a natural hollow that had been used as a midden, which also filled three drainage channels of late 11th/12th century date.
These followed the alignment of the road surfaces and so are probably monastic in context.
