Full description
Rear wall of Arundel Cottage … a regularly coursed wall using the same limestone seen in the upstanding remains (of King John's Palace). The regular coursing suggest that this is a medieval wall.
A pipe roll manuscript dated to 1348/9 talks of a 'claustrum encircling the manor in the north part from the great gates to the angle of the field'. Maun Cottage was called the Gate Inn in the 18th century and may well be the location of the former gatehouse. The wall at the rear of the cottages is therefore likely to be part of the perimeter wall for the manor site. The line of the wall can still be seen as a relict feature in the 1766 estate map. (1)
