Full description

15yds E of the (round) mound (L802) is a rectangular eminence, 241ft long, 77ft wide and approx 3ft high. Both mound and rectangular earthwork have a deep ditch on the N side, 36ft wide and 8ft deep. At the E end of the ditch is a pond, constructed c 100 years ago by the then owner of Radcliffe Hall. (On excavation) the long rectangular mound yielded no satisfactory results, beyond the interesting fact that C19 pottery fragments were scattered over the surface and it is probable that a certain amount of debris from the pond was spread there at the time of the pond's construction. Although the excavator believed this mound to have been part of a motte and bailey, it seems more likely it was the spoil dug out to create the pond, and the northern ditch was part of the water supply system. (4)
