Full description

NMR PRINTOUT 07.03.02 Notes: The castle of Hutton Conyers, built by Earl Allan circa 1136. It apparently consisted of a square control platform defended by a series of concentric banks and ditches, which have been much mutilated, probably when the castle was destroyed by Henry ll in 1154.
There appear to be two oblong courts on the north and east, and traces of an ancient sunken road to an identified entrance at the south east angle of the eastern enclosure.
A series of slight parallel banks centred at NGR SE32647343 may represent the remains of the earthworks on this side. The main defences have been obliterated by a combination of quarrying and land slip.
Within the area of the platform the ground is disturbed and some loose stones are apparent, but no recognisable foundations are visible.
Field observations were carried out dated 31.05.1962, and excavations on the site were carried out between 01.01.1976 and 31.12.1976. (09.03.03 AE).
