Full description

THE ORIGINAL CASTLE WAS PROBABLY ESTABLISHED DURING OR SOON AFTER THE HARRYING OF THE NORTH AND THE ISSUE OF A CHARTER BY HENRY I SOME FIFTY YEARS LATER SUGGESTS ITS EXISTENCE IN THE EARLY 12TH CENTURY. ONLY THE MOTTE CIRCUIT OF THE BAILEY AND THE OLD HALL SURVIVE FROM THIS FIRST PHASE. (0)
