1) A field evaluation located to W of site of Beneditine retreat of Cumnor Place, a quadrangular complex of early C14, which succeeded an earlier grange held by Abingdon Abbey. Evaluation recovered wall footings and structures that appear to relate to the pre-C14 abbey grange; then this grange was demolished to make way for the C14 Bendictine complex. The potential for pre-C14 archaeological remains surviving beneath the construction and demolition layers here is therefore high. A potential ground surface dated to the C11 & C12 also appears to have survived, at least to the W of the C14 building. Good potential for artefact assemblage from deposits directly associated with structures encountered, as well as environmental deposits.
