  • Description

1b - 2) Originally plotted on St Joseph and NMR Aps; AP evidence pulled together by N Clayton.
3-4) Still visible on RCHME overlay; extensive site consisting of trackways, enclosures, pits and linear features. Appears to respect PRN 2424. Undated on basis of cropmark evidence.
    5) Material collected by E Pocock and D Wise in the late 1950's and 1961-2 in area either side of Mill Lane. See shading on map provided by Dorothy Wise in 2004, and note the comments that much Medieval pottery found in vicinity of her house (opposite the church).
    6) Pottery, mainly Roman, identified quickly by P Booth 03/02/07. Material dates from C2-4, and probably represents low status farmstead. Noticeable lack of variety, which might suggest selective collecting. Low quantities of fine wares. Also found was few pieces of ceramic building material.
    7) From inventoried collection examined by C Burrill, the following Roman categories and quantities were determined from the same general site area: 160 coins, 15 brooches, 3-4 finger rings, 10 pieces of flue tile, as well as assorted Medieval to Post Medieval material.
    8) Site visit by P Booth and S Lisk on 10/12/07 involved meeting the Pococks of Windmill Farm, as well as the metal detectorist who "works" their fields. He thinks the main site area covers approx 15 acres, with a fairly even scatter across the area, mainly of greywares. There are no obvious concentrations.

NB: DRF information has been scanned and discarded by S Lisk, 04/12/14; this info will be digitally linked to this record.
