  • Description

    (1) Found in Court Close next to church in 1933. It may derive from a grave, ?C7th or later
    (3) Disc, cast bronze, gilt in recesses, interlace pattern, diameter 4.6cm. No evidence of true pin. ?brooch or dress fastener
    (4) Disc labelled as 'escutcheon'; discarded in 2015.
    (5) Interlaced patterns are associated with late dates (late C7th or early C8th). This is of interest in view of the earliest documentary reference to the Spelsbury area: a Mercian royal charter of 840. Find is suggestive of high status residence
