  • Description

    1) PRN 7802
Saxon North Gate discovered in excavation. This gate was destroyed in C13 and moved to a new site (PRN 2984) when whole of Castle St was shifted west to allow for construction of 3rd bank in castle defences. Sherds of black handmade grass-tempered pottery found. Original N gate was located in excavation beneath the outer bank of the castle defences. The earliest gate was of timber, but c1250, a stonearched gateway was erected over the town ditch, which was channeled into a culvert and a roadway laid over. The gateway was destroyed (c1275-1300) when the castle defences were extended; at the same time North St was realigned some 40yds to the W, and presumably a new gate erected.
    6) See DRF for map with plottings of both 1965 excavation, and those of 1966 and 1968. NGR for the North gate determined by Univ of Leicester work to be SU6081 8983.
