  • Description

1-4) A bump on the road at the position given for the site of this gate clearly shows the course of the town rampart, and consequently, that the gate was elsewhere. The amended position (SU 6065 8910) coincides with the junction of a bend in the rampart and the projection of St Mary's Street within the town, and Squires Walk without. Indirect evidence for the amended siting is provided by the probable remains of St John's Hospital (PRN 8775) which lies immediately beside the road without the gate
