  • Description

    1) In 1153 the defenders of Britwell Castle opposed Henry Plantagenet - when Henry became king, he presumably destroyed the castle, but castle hill remains.
    2) Not classified as a castle or moat for MPP
    3) Tenants of the land, which belongs to Britwell Priory, state that the low rise of ground on which these sites fall is know na sCastle Hill, but this is probably a corruption of Chasford Hill, an earlier name. To their knowledge there is no evidence for a castle having existed here. The OS siten falls on the NW slopes, below the hill top, which is where the church is sited. An inspectiveion of the area, which is wooded and overgrown is negative. The "moat" is a natural stretch of water lying in a marshy hollow at the foot of the holl on the NE side and fed by springs at the head of a gully t the SE. Local topography prevents the water from extending around the site, making this a dubious site for a moat. NB: all info added to this record, so listing discarded. See also moated orchard (PRN 16784).
