  • Description

    1) Mention of moat around the site, encountered during grave-digging operations in churchyard. Manor house neglected by early C17th. Hearne notes great foundations of old buildings. "Moat" refers to a stretch of stream that has at sometime been widened to accommodate a line of watercress beds, now disused, and the stream otherwise presents no similarities to a moat. No traces of moat found in the fields around the castle site or in the old or new graveyards.
    2) North west half of moated area built over by modern development.
    3) Not classified as either moat or castle for MPP.
    5) Interest in this site lies in the fact that it may well be the site of a Saxon hall, dating back to the C6. Precise location of site is uncertain. NB: all relevant information from this letter has been added to this record, so letter discarded.
