  • Description

    3) Information in summary field. All relevant information added, so form discarded.
    5) AP assessment for MPP project by S Weaver in 1999-2000 revealed info from Aps held by CAS. No further work done on this site for MPP
    6) During 2007-2009 non-intrusive investigations including magnetometry and GPR were carried out by SOAG. From observations of more than one outer ditch it is possible that more than one period of activity is represented, and a long sequence of perhaps ritual use may have occurred on the site. The site appears from the typology of the main ring ditch and central cairn to be a Bronze Age monument of significant proportions and the suggestion of an older ditch opens the possibility of a multi-period monument
6a) A field walking survey was carried out in 2009 by SOAG members in the field adjacent to the mound. Results indicated a high quantity of worked flint with several diagnostic tool types of the Bronze Age represented including scrapers, borers and cutting tools
    7) Further archaeological investigations in 2010 by SOAG, including geophysics and field walking, revealed previously unknown activity during the Mesolithic and Middle to Late Bronze Age at the barrow site, which probably extends into the local area. The density of the lithics recovered from field walking relating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age suggests a settlement and farming in the vicinity which has not been previously known about at this location
    8) Futher field walking by SOAG in 2012 in Barrow Field indicated a fairly even distrubution of finds from all over the field. Around 50 items of worked flint were recovered, the majority of which dated to the later Bronze Age period but a few were dated to the late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age lithic industries
