  • Description

    1) According to the farmer, this is the highest point of Andersey Island and was only just above water in 1947 when the rest of the land including the farmstead was flooded.
    3) There is a tradition here of an early pre-conquest monastic site and the church itself was only in use for a short period after the Norman conquest. On an A/P in Abingdon Museum, this rectangular cropmark with its long axis N-S is apparent on this higher land around the supposed site of the church. It could be that this is an early monastic enclosure for the hunting lodge, a boundary to the church yard, a boundary for the hunting lodge (late Saxon-Medieval) or an earlier unrelated structure. NB: All information from Aston's notes have been added to this record, so the notes were discarded.
