Summary

A 17m stretch of the Plummery Wall was revealed during the construction of a roundabout.

Monument Type(s):

  • WALL (Medieval - 1101 AD to 1539 AD)

Description

A 17m stretch of the Plummery Wall was revealed during the construction of a roundabout. It was built of flint and mortar and was 1.10m wide. The wall survived in parts to a height of 0.9m, although elsewhere service conduiting and adjoining brick buildings had reduced it. The build on the south (Abbey) side was partly obscured by a thin mortar rendering, but did appear to be rough-coursed. No rendering or other facing was evident on the very small lengths of the northern face, which could be examined. Superficial examination of mortar from the wall core suggested it to be very similar to the mortar from the wall core seen at the NCP car park site (01022.19.000). Evidence from this site suggests the possibility of a terrace on the line of the boundary of the Abbey precinct, and it appears that the wall line marks a significant drop in the levels down towards the river <2>.
