Description

A hospital for 12 lepers was founded between 1130 and 1175. It had no separate endowment and was administered by the abbey. Its location is unknown apart from a reference in 1479 where it was said to be 'in the est syde of the towne' <1>. It is suggested it was housed not far from the inner gateway. This building was taken down in 1479 and the foundations dug out when the assize courts were built (1901). The hospital was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen.
