Description

Wall, remains of. Indeterminate but probably medieval date. Fragmentary remains of limestone rubble wall, approximately 20m long and a maximum of 1. 5m high. probably formed part of precinct wall to Buildwas Abbey (qv) <1>

Included in 1997 revised Scheduling of Buildwas Abbey. From the Scheduling description: ->

-> The abbey precinct was bounded to the north by the river, and to the west by a tributary stream. A substantial wall marked its southern boundary, and a 34m stretch of this survives up to 0.9m high and 0.7m wide in the south west part of the precinct. East of this the wall has been robbed of stone, leaving a shallow trench which extends for c.35m, with traces of rubble remaining in some places. However, the wall would probably have continued eastwards to the Buildwas road <2>
