Description

Ice house. Mid-C18. Red brick covered by earth mound. Circular plan. Entrance to north-west (approach tunnel now demolished). Interior: domed roof with oculus. Tapered to drain at base. This was formerly one of the outbuildings to The Old Rectory, Claypit Street (qv). The Tithe Barn is not included on this list. <1>

Noted in Bob Jarrett's Gazetteer. <2>

In February 2013 a photographic record of the Ice House and barn at the Old Rectory, Whitchurch, was produced. Elements of the ice house that were uncovered during the work were photographed and concealed on completion. <3>

A desk-based assessment was carried out in 2010 on land at London Road, Whitchurch, as part of baseline assessment for a planning application. The ice house was noted; it may be shown as a dashed line on a plan of the Rectory Grounds, 1791. <4>

In July 2010, this building was assessed as part of an environmental impact assessment. The structure is of red brick covered by an earth mound on a circular plan with a now-demolished tunnel entrance. The roof is domed with an oculus. Although in poor condition and much overgrown its retention and presentation as a landscape feature would be thoroughly deserved. <5>
