Description
Cordlode applied to the gate in the Town Walls at the end of Swan Hill, and also to the path leading from this to the river. Doubtless named after the family of Corde who were living in Shrewsbury at the end of the C11 and who owned land behind the walls in the C13 <1a>
Speed shows a gate-tower at the end of Swan Hill <1b>
Wheeler's Tower [PRN 01451] commanded the lode on one side <1c>
The form of this gate is uncertain. The Burghley Map shows a doorway/postern symbol at about the right point, but as the draftsman left out Swan Hill and the Slang extending from it outside the wall, this cannot be regarded as reliable. Speed's Map of 1610 shows a gate with a tower. Rocque's Map of 1746 shows a large gap in the wall at this point, so it had probably been demolished by then <2>
A conservation management plan was prepared in 2015 for the entire circuit of town walls surrounding Shrewsbury (excluding around Shrewsbury Castle at the NE corner). This provides a general historic overview of the development of the town defences, together with detailed analysis and management recommendations for individual sections (in gazetteer form in volume 2). This gate is identified as 9b. <3>
