Description

The situation of the gate called Gatepol is not certain. Davies applied the name to the postern giving access to the Quarry at the top of Claremont Hill. it was known as Gatepol because it was at the highest point to which the rampart reached, the original level being that of the garden of St Chad's parsonage, six feet above the present street [<1a>]. Neither Speed's [<1b>] or Burleigh's [<1c>] maps show a gate tower at the end of Claremont Hill, but Burleigh's map shows a small postern <1>

A conservation management plan was prepared in 2015 for the entire circuit of town walls surrounding Shrewsbury (excluding around Shrewsbury Castle at the NE corner). This provides a general historic overview of the development of the town defences, together with detailed analysis and management recommendations for individual sections (in gazetteer form in volume 2). This gate is identified as 8b/9a. <2>
