Description

Date first Listed No of Structures 1 Greenhouse. Early C19. Glazed cast iron frame with rendered brick. Rectangular plan greenhouse with rectangular plan outbuildings behind spine wall. Frame: Elliptical profile frame of ten narrow bays with curved glass with glazed side and front wall panels. Cast iron gutter integral with wall-plate. Square ashlar piers with moulded plinth at corners and flanking central entrance. Spine wall of rendered and plastered wall as continuation of main garden wall to north. Cast iron ventilation grills below coping with sliding timber vents internally below. Cast iron covers to underfloor heating ducts. Round arch through wall to rear rooms. 3 room range to rear with central room with glazed cast iron framed vaulted roof, semi-circular gable end with iron multi-pane upper light over niche to rear. Openings to side rooms each with 2-light casement to side and plain boarded doorway to rear all with cambered head lintels. Cellar to north room. Type of Inspection Y <2>

Orangery. C1820, for Thomas Botfield, ironmaster. Cast-iron and glass, stone piers and rendered brick rear walls.
PLAN: rectangular on plan, orangery built against a tall brick heated back wall with an arch through to a barrel-vaulted glazed transept at the rear with brick walls; in the angles at the back are hovels, that to the north having a furnace in the basement.
EXTERIOR: the orangery has 9 bays with stone piers to the central doorway and at the corners. The bays are divided by the cast-iron main frames, the bays with small panes and iron glazing bars. The sides and roof are similarly divided and the roof has a semi-elliptical profile with curved ribs and glass. The doors have margin glazing bars. The Orangery at Hopton Court is a rare and particularly fine example of an early C19 conservatory. <4>

Derelict 1994 but grant aided by HLF and restored by 2008. <5>
