Description
Building survey of "solar block", part of curtain wall and the north-west tower of Ludlow Castle. The curtain wall and NW tower dated to late C11-late C12. The "solar block" was built in two phases in C13, and interpreted as a first floor hall over an undercroft. Detailed chronological evidence for phases of construction in late 1280s to c1308. The building formed the principal apartments of the castle until the "Great Hall" was built late 1320s. In C16th and C17th the solar block was remodelled to form smaller rooms. The floors and roof were removed in C18th <1>
