Description

LBA hoard, accounts of components vary. Four socketed celts, three palstaves and one spearhead found near..Red Castle. <1a>

'…in the ruins of Red Castle… a hoard of the late Bronze Age, comprising 2 looped palstaves, 4 socketed axes, and a tongue-shaped object that may be an ingot of metal'.. Are in the possession of Sir Alexander Stanier, The Citadel, Weston <1b>

Three 3-ribbed socketed axes, two of which are possibly from the same mould-drawings at BM.
Palstave-Rowlands Class I Gp I (No 858),
Palstave Rowlands Class NB2 Gp 2 (No 856),
Palstave-Rowlands Class2 Gp 2-looped (No 857) and
Spearhead-Rowlands Gp2-side looped (No 1356)
Objects were in the possession of A Sinclair of Hawkestone cf PRNs 00775 and 00844 <3>

Sir Alexander and Lady Stanier have left the area and the precise sites of the finds were not established (Field Investigators Comments F1 JHW 16-JAN-62) <6>
