Description

Remains of circular moat at Hawkstone Farm <1a>

A late C18 potato-house <1b>

The feature is a flat topped irregular mound whose purpose appears to have been to cover a large brick chamber. Adjoining it on the north west is a comparably large pit. No trace of a moat was found. OS FI 1962 <1><1c>

Noted in Bob Jarrett's Gazetteer. <2>

Discussed by Madge Moran (see PRN 17553) includes a good range of C19 farm buildings with a structure built into the side of an old motte. It seems too large for an ice house although it could have supplied a large household. Could it have been connected with wine-making? There was a short-lived attempt by the estate at growing a vineyard. Photograph of ?wine store. <3>

-> Large, rather flat motte, much of it cut away. No remains of any bailey. Built 1223, when called a fortalice. <4b> ->

-> Marchamley: a possible motte to the southern side of the village. Noted in a document of 1223 as a "fortalice", possibly adapted as a seige work in 1223. It contains the remains of an 19th century brick built potato house and a large pit. <4c>
