Description

Area of earthworks indicated on SCC Archaeological Advisory map <1>

CMHTS Comment:- These appear to show a mill mound or motte and a ditch in the area of Sharrow Mill Hill Field and of tenement plots fronting Yardington. No other mention of these earthworks is made in studies of the town and the area was in 1980-81 destroyed by housing development. Members of W.A.A.G. observed the destruction of Roman remains in this area but reported no medieval or post-med finds. Much had been bulldozed prior to their arrival however (PRN 02718). It is possible that these earthworks represent the remains of Whitchurch Castle <2>
