Description
Speed's map of 1610 shows a tower without a gate at the sharp change of direction of the east end of the southern stretch of the town wall at approx SJ4932 1226 (opposite the bottom of Belmont Bank) <1a>
This tower had probably gone by the mid-18th century as Rocque's map of 1746 shows no sign of it: the map shows that the southern frontage of Beeches Lane was built-up from about this point, so the tower may have been lost to or obscured by buildings <2>
