Description

Lily Chitty, in her 1951 article [ <1>], published borehole data given to her by the Borough Surveyor for a borehole nearly in the centre of the Square drilled in February 1950 but not more precisely located. From the surface to 9ft (-2.75m) was filled material, hardcore, bricks, rubble, soil; from 9ft to 17ft (-5.18m) was dark grey clay, sand and gravel . There was no peat, and Chitty commented that the borehole appeared to lie outside the area of the Shirehall peat deposit (represented by sites 60119-60121 etc). This is supported by a letter of 29-5-1885 to the Chronicle's Notes & Queries column to the effect that the Old Market Hall lies outside the peat area, standing on terra firma <2>
