Description

In August 1958 demolition of and excavation on the site of the premises of the Shrewsbury Typewriter Co. on Swan Hill came across two large sandstone blocks 'hollowed out in the centre'; these were passed on to the museum. Fragments of pottery and clay pipe (of 17th century date) were also found. <1>

Shr. Typewriter Co premises needs identifying from directories. <2>

Originally not mapped by the Urban Archaeological Database. The 1930s street directories identify Shropshire Typewriter Co as no 28, the highest house on the west of Swan Hill. The Typewriting Company is still listed in a directory of 1964 so was perhaps rebuilt. It is possible that the material here derives from the nearby site of Charlton Hall (PRN 01513). <3>
